Am I liable for this even though I knew nothing about it?
Someone made a check out to me from someone else’s checking account and cashed it at my bank. Now my bank is called, after cashing the check over a week ago, saying that the payment was stopped on it and I have to come up with this much money (over $900). Am I liable to pay the bank back? Even though I had no idea this check was made to me and they didn’t even check id or anything? Nothing came from my account but the bank wants their money back and is trying to get it from me. If I have to pay it, I will somehow, but I don’t see how this is my fault, since I had no idea this was even going on til the bank called. Help please!!! I meet with them tomorrow morning and need answers fast!
Looks like another scammer found you and the other persons’ account. Make sure the signatures don’t match on the backs of the checks and that can prove that you had nothing to do with it. The banks are in turmoil right now, as they seem to be getting scammed at every corner. I have passwords on my accounts at the banks I use for that very reason (children).
Good luck to you, and go in nicely with your tail between your legs. Make a tear if you have to. Find out why they didn’t check the other persons’ id before cashing the check. Mine is on file always and cashing checks usually require a proper id. If the check was made out to you, then it’s fraud charges by a ghost.
You can also contact your local police. Someone knew your name and what bank you use. I’m sure it was someone who knows you pretty well. File a report and show it to the bank.
